A New President Offers You His Greetings
It is with great honor and great humility that I stand here today as president of university. Having been involved in higher education in both the public and private sector for about 46 years, I pledge to you that I will bring all my background and experience in carrying out my duties to the fullest of my abilities.
In accepting this great challenge, I will establish four points on which I wish to concentrate my efforts as I endeavor to guide our university system:
First of all, I will endeavor to build the kind of pride in our system which it deserves and which all students should carry with them all their lives. As well, I want to create an atmosphere in which students will look back with fondness and gratitude to their alma mater. It is important that students have positive feelings toward the community in which they study and learn. The places which campuses of TUSW are located-Ikebukuro in Tokyo, Nagoya and Isezaki of Gunma-all have their own character. I want our students to feel that they are part of these communities and make local residents of these places proud to share their place with our students and with our university.
Secondly, in order to fulfill the true spirit of higher education, it is essential for our academic staff to maintain a real passion for teaching. I want to instill in every educator here the meaning of our traditional catch phrase, “to make those who think they can’t into those who think they can.”
This is part of our founding spirit, and we take those words very seriously. The campuses of our institution have established an enviable records of finding successful careers for our graduates, recognized as it has been by the public mass media. In fact TUSW ranks at the top among Japanese colleges in this regard. We continue to turn out qualified graduates in many areas of social sevises; public school teachers, public sector service technicians of various types, licensed psychiatric social workers and others. TUSW is proud of the service we render to our communities and to our nation.
Thirdly, international education and a broad world view are important ingredients in of TUSW and have been from the beginning, and I wish to continue and expand that ingredient. We want to make our institution more international by building programs for accepting students from all parts of the world. It is hoped that some our graduates will continue their educational development overseas, perhaps even earning Ph Ds from foreign universities as did the founder of TUSW. Japanese are always saying that our country should become more international. This university intends to do something about that by pushing students toward a truly international perspective.
Finally, my last of four points concerns student life. In order to make TUSW into the best academic environment we can, our three departments and the administration need to work together in a harmonious effort always with student interest in mind. I stand here alone, and with all my good intentions, I cannot carry out these ambitions alone; I need your help, your support and you good will.
Thank you.
President of Tokyo University and Graduate School of Social Welfare,
Doctor of Psychology, Tatsuya Matsubara
